Chapter 6
A few hours later after they returned to the main house, Alexander passed by the library and saw Ryan sitting at a table teaching Marco. Ryan was dressed in the black pants and white shirt, his hair was combed and Marco sat beside him holding a pencil doing his school work. Alex smiled and went to their room to unpack from their trip.
He opened his brown leather travel bag that held his most personal items and looked for the small black box that Maura had given him. It contained Marco’s ring, the one his mother left with him when he was an infant. Alex wanted to put it in a safer place. The box was at the bottom of the bag. Alexander picked it up into his hand and sat down on the bed to open it. He was curious. It hadn’t been opened in some time and the lid gave a squeak as Alex lifted it from the bottom half of the container. He froze when he saw it. He stared at it and couldn’t move. He was barely able to breathe. “No…” he murmured. There had to be an explanation. He closed the box, stood up from the bed and went to the phone. He waited impatiently as it rang and perspiration trickled down the back of his neck. “This is King Alexander. I would like to speak with my cousin, Cedric.” For as long as it was taking the butler to put his cousin on the phone, Alex could have gone to Willshire to speak with the man. Finally, Cedric came onto the line and spoke in a rush.
“You gave us thirty days or don’t you remember evicting us from the castle we’ve held for close to seventy-five years?”
“This is not about the castle!” Alexander barked out. “Listen to me!”
At the table in the library, Ryan stopped and looked down the corridor toward their bedroom. Alexander was yelling and his voice echoed through the halls. A door slammed shut sounding off a loud crack like a gun shot. Ryan glanced at Marco.
“He’s mad,” Marco said. “I didn’t do anything wrong. Did I?”
“No. I’m sure it’s not about you,” Ryan said. Alexander wouldn’t lose his patience that fast and his anger rarely reached that height. Ryan had evidence of that.
Inside the room, Alex lowered his voice to a menacing low growl. “Where is your ring?”
“My ring? Why? Do you want that too? Are you going to hock it to renovate the real dungeon we have here? I advocated to help you Alexander. I want you to know…”
“Cedric…” he hissed. “Shut-up.”
Cedric sighed on the other end of the line and reluctantly offered a bit of information. “I haven’t seen my ring in years.”
“Was it stolen?”
“How should I know?”
Alexander placed the ring next to the one on his own hand. They were identical.
“What is this about?” Cedric inquired. “We have twenty-eight more days to relocate to the country estate. We are going. There is no need to harass us!”
Alexander hung up the phone, placing the receiver back in the cradle.
